General Information
The Bobwhite quail is easily identified by their distinctive facial markings. These markings consist of a throat patch and a streak above each eye. One the males these markings are white and on the females a buff yellow color. The Bobewhite is a relatively small game bird with a mottled brown plumage thatr serves as an extremely errective camoflage.
In early March quail can be heard whistling their distinctive "bobwhite" call. By late May most adult males have paired up with a female and have begun nesting. The pair will build a grass roofed nest in shallow depressions on the ground. The pair will usually use early maturing species such as bluegrass and cheat, or residual cover such as broom sedge. Quail will often nest along roadsides and if fence rows where perennial grasses and light shrubby cover is found. If Bobwhite nest in pastures, it is usually limited to areas protected from grazing.
